Northgate Baptist Church in Edmonton, Alberta welcomed the weekend sun by hosting a fundraiser race for Marare, Uganda on June 29th. Northgate partners with Food for the Hungry to support this Ugandan community towards becoming a self-sustaining. Their efforts during the weekend were not wasted.
While the scorching sun challenged the endurance of both 10km and 5km participants, the generosity of those supporting them was also challenged. In total, the race raised, after expenses, just over $6,500, with individuals raising up to 1000$ in funds! Runners were accompanied by the presence of many volunteers and cheering fans on the side lines, making space in their busy weekends to show their support.
Shirley from Northgate, says: "We were also excited to spread the word regarding our partnership with Marare amongst the greater community. One third of our run participants are NOT part of Northgate or even connected, but signed up for our event via the Running Room website or through our community flyer drop offs. Many of those people expressed appreciation for our "cause" and mingled with us for some time after the event. New connections, new relationships...really encouraging to see!"
