FARMERS - MEN AND WOMEN BOTH - GATHER TO LEARN HOW TO BETTER RESPECT AND CARE FOR THEIR SOIL, AND DEDICATE THIS YEARS HARVEST. |
Some call it "Farming God's Way." It's a way of farming that incorporates major values taught in the Bible; values like redemption, rest, stewardship of the earth, and more. Farmers learn to focus on caring for their land and crops rather than using their land and crops to pump out produce. So, methods like crop rotation, resting the soil, organic fertilizing, mulching and bedding plants, making use of native plants and trees, and more.
In rural communities like Kabarore, Burundi, redemptive and restorative farming techniques shows far better results than traditional farming, as evidence in the following testimony shared by Mrs. Patricie Bucumi, a 52 year old mother and experienced farmer.
“I grew up in Yandaro sub-hill, but I had never seen such a big production of maize on so small a plot. When FH came, the agronomist started to train us on a new farming method called Farming God’s Way.
“In the beginning, I was reluctant because the method was demanding in terms of skills and mulch, and I felt uncomfortable to venture into something I had never done before. So I accepted to try the method on two hundred square meters the first year. The harvest was good, but had nothing extraordinary. I felt encouraged and tried a second time between September 2015 and January 2016.
“With [ongoing] close support of FH agronomist, I managed to do everything right. Now that the harvest time has come, the result is here and I am simply surprised. It is much more than what I thought was possible to get on two hundred square meters! I am excited and want to spread the technique on a bigger plot of my land!”
