Meet Chaltiel.
He is a brilliant student in his Grade 3 class and often scores the best marks. During a lean period in the family, however, he started to show a lack of interest in school and repeatedly missed class.
When notified, local Food for the Hungry (FH) staff member, Cleophace, decided to visit the family and investigate the problem. He talked to the parents who told him that the family was starving and that the child wanted to leave school to look for food.
Cleophace took the time to talk with Chaltiel about what was at stake and how staying in school was important for his future and to overcoming his hunger.
Then he handed the child six bags of vegetable soup mix. Used in conjunction with other foods and in place of beans, which are very expensive in the local market, the soup could last more than one month. The next day, Chaltiel was back at school.

The month of May preceding the second harvest season was a difficult time for my family. Getting the vegetable soup during this lean period saved my family and Chaltiel’s education. We can cook one bag of soup for four meals, and my family finds the soup very delicious. We are grateful to FH for providing this useful support.
