Emmanuel lives with his wife and four children in the Mutana community in Burundi. Right now, he’s thriving as a model farmer with adequate income to support his family. But life hasn’t always been this good.
Before FH began working in his community, Emmanuel had a much harder time farming. His life was hand-to-mouth, barely bringing in enough to put food on the table and make ends meet. With so many demands on his daily life, he struggled to save money for his family.
It was after FH began working in his community that he learned to implement new sustainable farming techniques into his work. Through training workshops, Emmanuel learned valuable agricultural concepts and techniques to help him make the most of the resources he had. And those resources began to grow.
“Before I learned about this new farming technique, I had never harvested such a big quantity of potatoes. With the production, I am now able to sell, to feed my family, and keep seeds for the next season.”
Emmanuel’s success doesn’t stop there, and he’s gone on to buy livestock to provide his family with even more income. “With the 200,000 BIF ($141 CAD) I got from potato sales, I am planning to purchase two goats so that I can have enough manure to use in my farms. The problem of famine is now solved in my family!”
